Famosa pelo seu expressivo conjunto de imagens em estilo barroca dos doze profetas em tamanho real esculpidas em pedra-sabão, pelo artista de renome internacional Antônio Francisco Lisboa, o Aleijadinho. Recebe milhares de turistas em busca de apreciar esta obra de arte belíssima bem como milhares de fiéis que vão ao Santuário do Bom Jesus de Matosinhos. Em 1985, todo este conjunto foi tombado pela UNESCO e transformado em patrimônio cultural da humanidade.
Chegamos em Congonhas vindo de Ouro Preto, cidade incrível, que deveria ser visitada por todo brasileiro. O inconveniente são as curvas que são várias e o fluxo de carros que aumenta muito quanto mais se aproxima de Belo Horizonte. Nesse caso o percurso não se faz com menos de 1 hora.

Alem de ser a “Cidade dos Profetas”, Congonhas é um grande centro de peregrinação. Todo ano, reúne milhares de fiéis católicos. Entre 7 e 14 de setembro, período em que é comemorado no município o jubileu do Senhor Bom Jesus do Matozinhos.
Esta festa existe desde 1760. Há missas em vários horários e diversas barraquinhas que vendem comidas típicas, roupas, sandálias, bebidas e artigos religiosos. Tem até uma área muito grande que fica reservado para acolher as excursões que vem de vários pontos da cidade, chamado de Romaria. Na Semana Santa ocorrem encenações da Paixão de Cristo, Cerimônia do Lava-pés e muitos shows.
Antônio Francisco Lisboa, o Aleijadinho nasceu em Vila Rica, hoje Ouro Preto, no ano de 1730 . Era filho de uma escrava com um mestre-de-obras português. Alem de escultou era arquiteto, por volta de 40 anos de idade, desenvolveu uma doença degenerativa. Quando já estava com os movimentos limitados, pedia para seus ajudantes amarrarem as ferramentas em seus punhos para continuar a esculpir e talhar suas obras. Foi um gênio!!!
Aleijadinho sempre utilizou o estilo Barroco. As obras que realizou em Congonhas foram feitas já com a doença estabelecida. São 12 em pedra-sabão, que são os 12 profetas e 66 imagens esculpidas em madeira. Morreu pobre com 76 anos e aos cuidados de uma nora em Ouro Preto. Suas obras só foram ter o reconhecimento merecido, anos depois de sua morte. Visitar Congonhas não precisa ser um católico fervoroso, mas sendo um apreciador de obras de arte, já se sentirá em um ambiente de altíssima qualidade.
As seis capelas que compõem o Jardim dos Passos que estão em frente à basílica em uma ladeira muito íngreme, representam a Via Sacra. Nelas estão lindas imagens esculpidas em madeira. Obras estas que também foram realizadas pelo Aleijadinho.
O Museu de Congonhas é outro ponto alto da cidade. Claro que depois do Santuário e as obras do Aleijadinho. Inaugurado a pouco tempo em 2015. O prédio é muito bonito e tudo muito organizado. Fica localizado na parte baixa da colina que está o Santuário. Não tem como passar despercebido e uma visita ao Museu é obrigatória. Uma exposição atraente e dinâmica, com todos os detalhes do Santuário, desde a sua construção até os dias de hoje.
O museu atrai tanto os que buscam o fator religiosidade como o cultural. Contam toda a história dos Profetas de Aleijadinho e das pinturas do Mestre Ataíde. No subsolo do Museu de Congonhas fica a Galeria das Réplicas.
Depois de visitar o Santuário, os Doze Profetas e as Capelas dos Passos da Paixão de Cristo e o Museu de Congonhas, uma boa dica é almoçar ou fazer um lanche no Bistrô que tem dentro do museu. É bem bonitinho e o atendimento é ótimo. Outro local bem acolhedor para jantar é no Hotel Casarão que fica bem pertinho do Museu. Comida mineira excelente e com porções fartas, sem contar que poderá ter a vista dos Apóstolos iluminados.
O Museu de Congonhas funciona de terça a domingo, das 9:00 horas às 17:00 horas e às quartas, funciona das 13:00 horas às 21:00 horas. O site é: http://www.museudecongonhas.org.br o valor do ingresso é bem barato, apenas 10 reais e tem até a possibilidade de pagar meia-entrada.
Tem até uma exposição sobre o desastre que ocorreu em Mariana. A mineradora Samarco que era a responsável pela barragem de Fundão e esta barragem se rompeu. Provocando o vazamento dos rejeitos que passaram por cima de várias cidades. Poluindo rios e plantações. O rompimento da barragem de Fundão é considerado o maior desastre industrial com destruição do meio ambiente da história brasileira. Uma tragédia!!
